What causes acne

Exactly what causes acne is generally hard to pinpoint, yet the triggers of serious skin problems are thought to be a combination of factors.

Blemishes can occur in all skin types and races, especially during the teenage years when hormones are overactive. It can, however, rear its ugly head in adults as well.

Male acne is mostly due to the combined effects of androgenic hormones (the male hormones, testosterone and dihydrotestosterone), plus bacteria and inflammation of the oil glands. Aggravating factors include increased oil production and blocked pores.

Blemishes that are considered non inflammatory include whiteheads (closed comedones) and blackheads (open comedones). These can develop to the inflammatory stage which includes papules, pustules, nodules and cysts.

Multiple causes of acne

acne causes

Are rampant hormones what causes acne? Yes - absolutely. However they're not the only causes. Problem complexions also come from:

• rapid shedding of dry skin (usually at puberty)

• external oils on skin

• bacteria

• greasy cleansers, hair products and hair sprays

• oils encountered "on the job" or during the day

• touching skin or letting hair hang on your face

• genetic predispositions or heredity factors

• vitamin deficiencies

• medications and prescription drugs

• diet

• clothing that increases sweating - or skin's prolonged contact with damp clothing

• hats, helmets and pads used in work and sports

• stress (Some scientists are suggesting that chemicals released by the skin during stress can make any inflammation worse.)

• Research is showing that a buildup of harmful chemicals on the skin can cause acne, dryness and skin cancer. The very products you're using to clean your hair and skin or clear your acne may be what causes acne breakouts.

Adding fuel to the fire

Cleansing your skin too much, particularly with harsh abrasive scrubs or cleansers, can aggravate your blemishes by causing your skin to produce more oil. Use a gentle cleanser that does not contain ingredients known to be harmful to your health.

If you choose not to read labels and learn what's in the products you use on your skin, at least start with certified organic products (for your skin type, of course). They don't contain harmful chemicals.

Without knowing the right way to squeeze or pick pimples, you can often make matters worse.

It's evident that not all of what causes acne - heredity and hormones for example - are under your control, but taking charge of, and changing, whatever is possible in your lifestyle, can make a significant difference in your skin.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems,
but it will annoy enough people
to make it worth the effort.
