Shaving
Shaving is the process of removing the parts of hair shafts that have grown up through the skin. This practice goes back about 100,000 years to the stone age when man first started pulling hair from his body. The removal of a facial hair may have meant survival as there was less for an opponent to grab in combat, and it was easier to eat food without hair in the way. In the ages since pulling out hair, man has used sharpened flint blades, metal and copper razors, pumice stones and even burning twigs to singe his whiskers in the quest for less hair on his face. A 1/4 inch stubble was considered an accomplishment. That may be the origin of the "scruffy" look. As men eventually chose to look younger (beards were connected with old age), more modern equipment came to the fore. The straight razor, used in the early 1800's, provided the closest most consistent shave known up until that point. The safety razor came about toward the end of the 1800s, and the "disposable" razor was patented by King Camp Gilette in 1900. With the equipment available today, men can accomplish the look they want on their own...and change that look as often as they choose. Recent research indicates men who take the hair off their faces regularly are far more likely to have sex than men who don't. This may definitely be one of the reasons men perform this ritual.
