Scruffy
Scruffy, unshaven, 5 o'clock shadow, soul patches... whatever you call it, the look is popular. Both gay and straight men are sporting "designer stubble" to look decidedly masculine with a hint of mystery and danger. It also has an attitude.... independent, rebellious (a devil-may-care feeling) - and it's more than a little sexy.
Why is it hot? Men haven't had all that many options in dress or grooming until recently. Fashions, attitudes and outlooks are changing almost daily. Now, whatever you choose - from being bearded to the clean-shave look or in between with scruffy, is accepted as a personal choice and a sign of individuality.
Is it for you?Not everyone can pull off a 5 o'clock shadow. If your beard is thin, scraggly or grows in uneven patches - or if your chin isn't angular or square, it might not be your best bet. Try the look and the feel. See how you AND your partner like it - and be prepared to change it.
How to achieve "scruffy"Designer stubble is an ongoing process. Shave every couple of days to keep the hairs short without growing into a full beard. Inexpensive clippers with an adjustable-height feature let you trim hair to the length you want. If you don't like trimmers, you have to resort to shaving and begin again. If your hair grows fast or is thick and heavy, you'll need to trim or shave more often. Look at yourself in a mirror from all angles, and with different facial expressions. The scruff that looks good when you're serious may look ridiculous with a smile on your face.
Using trimmersTrim WITH the direction of beard growth. This gives you a less close shave than going against the hair growth. With a less-close shave, the whiskers are already a bit longer and the desired shadow is visible sooner. A less-close shave can also help eliminate all or most ingrown hairs or "razor bumps". For contrast, define a neckline and keep below that line clean shaven. The other area to keep stubble-free is around your cheekbones. Define the area you want to keep looking smooth above the "scruff line".
Care of "scruff"Stubble itches at a certain height, and ingrown hairs can create pimples. To help with both, keep your facial skin VERY clean and wash the stubble area with a good quality organic shampoo. Following the shampoo with a quality conditioner will keep the hair as soft as possible - a good thing for you AND your partner.
Good newsIf the "accidentally-on-purpose" scruffy look is not for you, the process can be easily reversed - or you have a good start on a full beard. Your face is like a canvas. You can paint over it any time.
