Oily AND Sensitive Skin
I have the double whammy of having both oily AND sensitive skin and am having a lot of problems finding products that work for both. As I'm not rich I don't tend to seek out salons for products. Any suggestions?
Skin can be both oily and sensitive when it’s working to protect itself. Extra oil or sebum is produced by the skin to defend itself against harsh soaps or cleansers. This can happen because of products used recently or due to a buildup over time.
Products containing Sodium Lauryl Sulfates, (a large percentage of cleansing products and medicated skin washes), are harsh enough to necessitate the skin’s producing “protective” oils.
Harsh chemicals also strip skin of its natural pH balance. Without the natural pH balance, skin becomes sensitive and susceptible to irritation.
Many products advertised to control pimples and acne also contain known toxic chemicals. Benzoyl peroxide and Isopropyl Myristate, used in most acne treatment products, are two such toxins. Benzoyl peroxide was banned in Europe over 10 years ago. Recent studies show a buildup of such toxins on the skin can cause acne.
Things to do
• Check out the ingredients in products you're using or in those recommended by a friend. Every skin is different, so what works for someone else may not work for you.
• Research the ingredients in products, even those marked "natural" or "organic". They may include a natural or organic ingredient or two, yet contain harsh chemicals as well. You won’t know until you read the labels.
• Choose the cleanest, most chemical-free, fragrance-free products you can find.
• For oily skin, look for products that do double duty. For example, some toners also have ingredients that exfoliate; moisturizers are available with sunscreen in them, etc. The fewer products layered on oily skin, the better - and fewer products are a boon to your budget.
• All skin types need moisture and moisturizers to help replenish water content. Oil on skin is not the same as moisture, (Think about plants - you can’t water them with oil.)
• Last but not least, drink lots of good quality water. Water hydrates skin cells from the inside, giving it a healthy glow, better texture and fewer lines and wrinkle
