Cystic acne
Cystic acne is a harsh form of acne that’s rarer than regular acne even though the infection and causes are the same. The pimples become more severely infected because the blocked oil glands actually burst under the skin. Cysts are formed and swollen pus-filled red pustules are visible on the skin surface.
About the cystsThese are not true “cysts” because they don’t dilate the skin and are not abnormal membranous sacs or blister-like pouchesInstead, the zits with this harsh form of acne are large nodes of infection and inflammation, which, like regular acne, can affect faces, neck, back, shoulders and upper arms. Note: Research is suggesting that there is a genetic link to the breakage of the oil glands (i.e some family predisposition to breakage) but it’s not clear yet. Problems that can develop from these cystsScarring is common with cystic acne. If the nodes are left untreated, scarring can occur. There are two distinct kinds of scarring: • a permanent scar if the infection is either severe, not treated or abused further. • a “6-month scar” called a macule, a raised patch of skin, resembling a cyst, located where the pimple used to be. This will disappear as the skin heals itself.
Treatment for cystic acne • Do all the things you should be doing with regular acne. • Leave cysts alone. Squeezing may cause a deeper infection and more painful inflammation which will last much longer than if you had left it alone. • Use chemical-free skin care products as research is showing that a build-up of chemicals on the skin can cause acne and other skin problems. (Read labels, research ingredients or start your search with certified organic products which contain no harsh chemicals.) • Dermatologists may lessen swelling and prevent scarring by administering cortisone. If you have painful cysts, see your doctor for oral medications such as Tetracycline, Minocycline, Doxycycline, Isotretinoin or Erythromycin. These are available in different trade names (the common names under which they’re sold). The medications for cystic acne, all with benefits and downsides, are not to be taken lightly. Be sure to see a doctor and work with what he or she prescribes. credit: DamnMushroom
