Cleansing skin care

A good cleansing skin care routine may be the best thing you can do to ensure healthy, good-looking skin.

Washing properly keeps skin pores from clogging and pimples from forming.

The routine you set up depends on your skin type and schedule.

Washing lightly in the morning and more thoroughly at night after a day's activities is generally sufficient, unless you've been exercising or exposed to excessive dirt.

Water for skin

To look good and replenish itself, skin needs water (hydration). Little water enters the body from washing, splashing or soaking because the skin is waterproof.

Hydrate the skin from the inside by drinking good quality water and eating fresh fruits and vegetables, which contain water.

How to determine your skin type

When you wake up in the morning, take a clean tissue and wipe your face with it before you wash it.

If you have normal skin there will be no oil on the tissue and your skin will not feel tight.

Oily skin will leave transparent spots (oil) on the tissue.

Dry skin leaves no oily spots and feels taut or tight.

Sensitive skin can be any of the above types. It's termed 'sensitive' when it tends to be tight, blotchy or react to products by becoming red, itchy or inflamed.

What to use

There are cleansing skin care products for every skin type. For dry or sensitive skin, you want one that's extra gentle, fragrance free and non irritating.

For an oily complexion, find a product that absorbs some of the oil on your face.

Remember to read the label to see if the product contains any harmful or toxic ingredients you DON'T want on your body! What's on your skin gets into your body very quickly - look at how fast nicotine patches work.

There are companies that have product ingredients listed on their sites.

How to wash - really!

• First, wash your hands so you don't spread dirt and bacteria from your hands to other areas.

• Use lukewarm water, make a lather with the cleansing skin care product you're using and apply it with light, circular motions.

• Choose a product that contains as few harmful or toxic ingredients as possible. There are some that meet those parameters AND have a safe sunscreen in them - like UV Protective Shower Gel

• Use your hands or a washcloth, as long as you don't rub or scrub, which scratches and irritates - a big "no-no" for most skin types.

• Be extra gentle around the eye area and work a little bit more on the chin, where more dirt accumulates.

• Rinse well, including hairline and neck areas. Soap residue can clog pores and cause pimples.

• Last, pat your face dry with a towel. Don't rub. Rubbing only pulls the skin, increasing the tendency toward wrinkles now, or as you get older.

Just for you

Do yourself a favor. Set up a routine, use the best cleansing skin care product you can find for your skin type, wash properly - and enjoy the process. It will make you look and feel better - and it's very refreshing!
