Chronic jock itch

Chronic jock itch is a distinct possibility if you experience one or more episodes of Tinea cruris after all symptoms of the condition have cleared up or have been "cured" for a while.

Note This is the main reason it's important continue the application of whatever medications or remedies you chose, well past the time the rash and symptoms have disappeared.

Seventy-five percent of adult males experience jock itch at some point in their lives, yet most of these cases are treated, inexpensively and at home, with over-the-counter products or simple jock itch home remedies.

A few basic measures can prevent its coming back.

What to know and look for

Jock itch is a fungal infection characterized by lesions, red skin, and a noticeable border between the part of the thigh that's affected and the part that isn't.

• Jock itch almost never involves the scrotum or penis. but rather the inner thighs, adjacent skin, and any areas of skin that overlap, including around the anus and in the various skin folds of obese individuals.

• If the scrotum and penis are involved, the most likely cause is Candida albicans, the same type of yeast responsible for a vaginal yeast infection.

• A few other groin rashes mimic jock itch.

The first, Intertrigo, is a red, macerated rash that burns, itches and may includes skin cracks and oozing.

It is caused by a yeast infection and/or the friction of skin on skin. It is often seen in obese patients and aggravated by moist skin conditions.

The second is Erythrasma, a bacterial infection, characterized by irregular pink patches that turn to brown scales. It affects the groin and advances down the inner thigh .

To be certain whether or not you have chronic jock itch, visit a doctor or dermatologist for a KOH test. Scrapings of the skin are examined under a microscope to see if the fungal elements specific to Tinea cruris are present.

If what you have is not chronic jock itch, you will at least learn what you do have, and what can be done to treat it.
