Beard - grow one or not?

A beard can be anything from a full biblical-prophet style to a small goatee or the scruffy, unshaven look that's popular and sexy.

No matter the form or length of your whiskers, beard trimming is a must and the skin that shows through or around facial hair needs to look clean, healthy and very appealing.

To accentuate the shape of your whiskers, the rest of your face needs to be kept hairless. This means knowing the art of shaving using a blade and cream or using an electric-razor.

The top 10 reasons men give for sporting facial hair.

10. My boss hates stubble of any kind.

9. To make my chubby face look thinner.

8. I'm rebelling....it's a social protest.

7. To hide facial flaws ..i.e. I hide my weak chin.

6. To keep my face warm in cold weather.

5. To look more sophisticated and important.

4. For religious reasons.

3. To look older (so I don't get carded).

2. I hate shaving / I'm too lazy to shave regularly.

1. My partner thinks scruffy is sexy.

Controlling pimples

To be appealing, your face, even the parts hidden under your beard, must be free of itchy spots and pimples which come along with stubble for several reasons:

• excess oil on the skin clogs the pores

• more dirt and oil (or food particles!) are trapped by the growing hair

• skin bacteria have a place to thrive

• ingrown hairs

Removing blackheads or pimples can create more blemishes unless you learn the proper procedures for zit-popping.

Being clean-shaven in summer

What is grown for winter is often shaved in summer. One obvious reason is that it's cooler.

In additional, excess perspiration in summer creates a warm damp areas on the skin surface that bacteria love. Bacteria plus oil and dirt accumulating in sweaty pores is a prime cause of zits.

Shampooing a beard with a gentle, organic shampoo can keep the skin clean and bacteria under control.

He that has a beard is more than a youth,

and he that hath none is less than a man.
