Age Spots

Age spots, (also called liver spots, sun spots and solar lentigines), are signs of premature skin aging caused by ultraviolet damage from sun exposure or tanning beds.

Smoking, a poor diet and a liver that's not functioning well can also play a contributing role. Flat and grey or black in color, "solar lentigines" vary in size and usually appear on the face, shoulders and arms - the areas most exposed to the sun.

They generally appear after the age of 40 however can also affect young people.

Dealing with age spots

age spots
Age spots are harmless, but can look like cancerous growths. If you don't like how they look, they can be lightened with skin-bleaching products (see below) or removed by a doctor.

Preventing liver spots in the first place is a better idea. Avoid being in the the sun from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or, if that's not possible, wear wear sunscreen or sun protective clothing.

If you don't like how they look

• cover them with a dot or two of concealer/make up (yes...men have discovered this female trick) and blend gently into the rest of your skin. This is the easiest and least expensive.

• have a doctor freeze the area lightly with liquid nitrogen.

• use a bleaching cream (hydroquinone), - which may contain harmful ingredients or may not be successful.

• research Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) as a way to get rid of age spots and other skin disorders.

• find out about Vitamin A which is being found to accelerate the body's natural exfoliating process (removal of the top layer of "dead" skin cells) when applied directly to the skin in higher dosages.

• check with a dermatologist about in-office chemical peels, or research the over-the-counter chemical peels that are now available. (Remember to check out the ingredients.)

• ask about laser resurfacing, a way to burn the spots off skin's surface.

• look into a relatively new, non-invasive procedure called Non-Ablative Skin Rejuvenation. It uses natural pulses of light to activate dying skin cells, causing them to act more like younger skin cells.

8-10 repetitions of this procedure followed with applications of vitamin rich skin creams may bring about the desired results.

Caution

Skin quickly absorbs what's applied to it and the ingredients reach internal organs in a very short time. (Think of how nicotine and birth-control patches work through the skin).

Before you put any chemicals on your skin, search on line for what's known about any ingredients you can't identify, and make an informed decision.

Looking younger and getting rid of age or liver spots is good. Continuing to live a healthy life is much more important!
