Acne treatment

Acne treatment is important to people of every culture and race from Alaska to Zimbabwe.

All of them, especially the 85%-90% of those with teen acne, are looking for ways to control the seemingly endless number of pimples and zits that appear daily.

No one product works for everyone, no matter what ads say.

Individual skins and what causes acne vary enough that you'll be better off following the basic steps that stop the pimple-forming bacteria from thriving on your skin.

After you have the basics down pat, you can determine which acne treatment works for you, that is IF you still need anything!

(See Teen acne, What causes acne, Acne myths for how and why breakouts happen and what makes them better - or worse.)

The basics of the smartest acne treatment

• Start with washing your skin the right way, moisturizing and reading labels. Read the ingredients on "organic" and "natural" product labels in the same way you would the label on any other product.

• A poor diet of greasy foods, chocolate, pizza and soda or pop may not give you acne, but it also doesn't give your body what it needs to be healthy - and that includes healthy skin.

You'll look better all around if you eat more fruits and vegetables - and drink good quality water (to flush out your system). (Acne tips)

• Getting a good night's sleep is important because restoration and healing take place while we sleep

• Stop squeezing pimples. If you simply can't resist popping a zit, at least learn the basics of how to do it to prevent scarring and getting more pimples.

• If you use a toner or aftershave, avoid products with high concentrations of alcohol (either isopropyl or common rubbing). Alcohol strips the skin and sets up a reaction where more oil forms.

• Keep your hands away from your face! The bacteria that cause acne are always on your skin. Touching, rubbing or leaning on your hands can push the bacteria into your pores to start the breakout process.

• Along these same lines, hats and headbands create heat and friction on your skin. That's an ideal environment for zits to form, so don't wear them. Sports helmets are necessary - and so is removing them (and sweaty sports clothing) - and showering - asap.

• Learn about home remedies as acne treatment. Some will work better than others for your skin type, yet you won't break the bank in trying them.

A hint here....use the purest and best quality ingredients you can find in your home remedies. Organic ingredients may cost a bit more, however you only use a small amount at a time and you won't be putting chemicals on your skin when you use them.

• Stress is generally not a cause of acne, but it can make it look worse. Find stress relievers that work for you - and use them regularly.

• Avoid spending more than a few minutes in the sun. A little bit of sun is a good acne treatment, yet burning and tanning create more dead skin, clogged pores and you-know-what.

Stick to a daily regimen of washing and moisturizing your skin to prevent recurrences. Make it a life-long habit - your skin will show its appreciation.

Note: In the US, there are not the kinds of governmental standards or regulations on skin care and cosmetic products that there are in Europe and other countries. Cosmetic companies are free to make their own decisions on everything from advertising claims to product quality.

Be aware of the ingredients in the products you're currently using in your acne treatment, and in any products you use on your skin in the future.
